The Mutebutton treatment requires the placement of an electrode array onto the patient's tongue. This is an inherently alien experience with few analogies. Several rounds of concept mock-ups and testing were carried out to create and refine this piece of “in-mouth” electronics.
We have partnered with Mutebutton over several years on both product design and branding. It has been a unique opportunity to work alongside a company as they develop from a start-up to an established Medical Technology brand.
Working with mutebutton we have adopted an iterative approach to the design of their treatment device. Firstly it was important to skin their prototype internals to facilitate user testing without intimidation. Secondly we had to create a design that could be prototyped for clinical trials in quantities no larger than one hundred. Finally, and most recently, we have been working together to create the final unit design for launch. This final activity has been an exercise in cohesion, pulling together all of our collective learning from 3 years of working together.
